Our History and Board of Directors
Our founder and past chair of the Board of Directors is Madylon Meiling, Ph.D. Her passion and commitment to Lake Tahoe’s cultural growth led directly to her founding of the Lake Tahoe SummerFest, now Classical Tahoe.
Inspired by living at Lake Tahoe and being surrounded by the majestic Sierra Nevada mountains, Dr. Meiling envisioned a festival to celebrate the beauty of the landscape with classical music, visual and performing arts and educational seminars for residents and visitors from around the world. In that light, she imagined including concurring events to enlighten children of all ages.
That was the beginning.
The North Lake Tahoe Resort Association hired Webb Management to develop a Cultural Facilities Master Plan for new, proposed and/or renovated cultural facilities in the North Lake Tahoe Region. The results of this feasibility study and business-planning document focused on audience and user demand, existing and proposed facilities, and their benefits and impacts. In conclusion, it suggested a Regional Cultural Center for the Arts be constructed on the campus of Sierra Nevada College, or in the area, to serve the local community and Lake Tahoe Basin through a regional effort.
While this vision remains, Classical Tahoe’s commitment to invest in the creation of cultural activities to develop a unified “regionalism through the arts” also continues.
With this initiative, we strive to light the torch to fuel a creative economy that serves all whom appreciate the wonders that arts and culture can bring to our lives.
The dream is coming true.
Classical Tahoe features renowned soloists from the world's stages and exceptional musicians drawn from the New York Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Seattle Symphony and other exceptional orchestras throughout the world.
Board of Directors
A volunteer Board of Directors comprised of individuals from the public and private sectors leads Classical Tahoe. The Board of Directors is responsible for governance over the business affairs and property of Classical Tahoe. They also provide counsel to the Artistic Director of Classical Tahoe.
The Board of Directors meets eight times per year and its Board Committees meet regularly to thoroughly discuss and resolve the key issues that face the organization on a year-round basis. All Directors on the Board are requested to "give or get" a minimum of $5,000 annually.
The critical focus of the Board of Directors is: alignment on the mission, vision and goals of Classical Tahoe; leadership development to successfully accomplish the mission, vision and goals; raise the necessary funds to implement the mission, vision and goals; and assure that Classical Tahoe audiences experience the transformative power of classical music.
