LAKE TAHOE, NV (MAY 9, 2022) – Classical Tahoe Festival and Music Institute has announced its upcoming season, July 14 to August 18, 2022. The festival expands its season from three weeks to four with the inaugural Brubeck Jazz Summit and additional chamber music and free community concerts.
“The Festival has become a summer tradition in Lake Tahoe, providing a place for social connection, a reason to unplug, the space to process emotion, and the opportunity to learn something new,” says Classical Tahoe Executive Director Karen Craig. “Classical Tahoe’s mission is to build a cultural community at Lake Tahoe to match the scenery.”
Guest artists this year include three-time GRAMMY winner mezzo-soprano, Isabel Leonard, GRAMMY-nominated violinist Tessa Lark, marimba virtuoso Svet Stoyanov, famed Cuban pianist and composer Aldo López-Gavilán, and critically acclaimed early music specialist Dongsok Shin.
Three exceptional guest conductors Jonathan Darlington, David Chan, and Ken-David Masur were nominated by musicians of the Classical Tahoe Orchestra and selected for an invitation by the Search Committee comprised of members of the Classical Tahoe Board, Orchestra, and Administration.
World Premiere of new Orchestral Work by Jake Heggie Dedicated to Joel Revzen
The world premiere of Lake Tahoe Symphonic Reflections by American composer Jake Heggie will be featured on the opening night of the orchestral series Friday, July 22. Heggie’s new work was commissioned by Classical Tahoe to celebrate the life and honor the memory of Joel Revzen, Classical Tahoe’s founding artistic director & conductor, who passed away in 2020 from COVID-19.
“We are beyond thrilled to be premiering Jake Heggie’s orchestral suite Lake Tahoe Symphonic Reflections this summer,” says Classical Tahoe’s Interim Artistic Director and Concertmaster Laura Hamilton, “With this commission, Classical Tahoe is proud to introduce an important new work to the symphonic repertoire, furthering the vision of our founding music director, the late Joel Revzen.”
Other program highlights include Haydn’s Sinfonia Concertante featuring virtuoso soloists from the Classical Tahoe Orchestra, Sarah Vonsattel, violin and Winona Zelenka, cello, Nathan Hughes, oboe, Whitney Crockett, bassoon; Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson’s Sinfonietta No. 2: “Generations”; symphonies of Beethoven, Schubert, Rachmaninoff, and Bizet, Aldo López-Gavilán’s piano concerto Emporium, Ravel’s Boléro, Bach’s Brandenburg Concerti, and more.
Inaugural Brubeck Jazz Summit brings worldwide jazz talent to Lake Tahoe
The inaugural Brubeck Jazz Summit, July 10-16, will bring 34 exceptionally talented students to Lake Tahoe for an intensive educational program in jazz performance as a living legacy of the musician and international statesman, Dave Brubeck. The students come from 13 states and 3 countries. The Summit Faculty concert will open the festival on July 14 with Artistic Director Chad LB, saxophone, Sean Jones, trumpet, Chris Brubeck, trombone, Connie Han, piano, Gilad Hekselman, guitar, Eric Harland, drums, Dan Brubeck, drums, Rodney Whitaker, bass.
Second Year of Classical Tahoe Academy Partnership with Sphinx Organization
The second year of a partnership between the Classical Tahoe Academy and the Sphinx Organization will bring 12 Black and Latinx musicians to be in residence as Academy Fellows. The Fellows will perform with the Classical Tahoe Orchestra and take part in a customized experience of mentorship, networking, and audition preparation. The ultimate goal of this initiative is job placement for musicians of color in American orchestras.
PBS Reno Livestream and Series Season 3
For the third consecutive year, PBS Reno will film and live-stream six orchestra concerts. A fully-produced broadcast series of six episodes will air across the Lake Tahoe and Northern Nevada regions and be available worldwide online and through the PBS Video App beginning in March 2023. Season 1 of PBS Reno’s Classical Tahoe series has been picked up by American Public Television (APT) for national distribution to 300+ PBS member stations beginning in May 2022. Past episodes are available to view free of charge at PBSReno.org/classicaltahoe.
Recording Aldo López-Gavilán at Skywalker Studios
Classical Tahoe will honor a commitment and dream of Maestro Joel Revzen’s to make a studio recording of Aldo López-Gavilán’s kinetic piano concerto, Emporium, that received its World Premiere with the Classical Tahoe Orchestra in 2017. The “archival recording” of Emporium is played in high rotation by Performance Today (125 million listeners a week). There will be three studio sessions, August 8-9, 2022, at Skywalker Ranch in Novato, CA with Academy Award-winning chief engineer Shawn Murphy.
Pavilion Under the Stars
The Classical Tahoe Ricardi Pavilion provides an amphitheater performance setting under the stars. The white-peaked canopy opens to the audience seated in a custom-built, 20-row grandstand in the trees offering fabulous sight lines from pairs of luxury seats distanced in every direction. This 400 seat design provides a safe outdoor concert environment while maintaining the true heart of a Classical Tahoe experience.

The safety of patrons and artists is always Classical Tahoe’s top priority. Classical Tahoe, in close advisement with our 2020, 2021, and 2022 Health Advisor Dr. Helen Trop-Zell, will be following local, state, and federal safety guidelines for concert gatherings this year. All Classical Tahoe musicians and staff are fully vaccinated. Season 11 programs are subject to change.
