CLASSICAL TAHOE ANNOUNCES 2019
MUSIC FESTIVAL AND INSTITUTE

The Classical Tahoe Festival and Music Institute is held annually in North Lake Tahoe, Nevada. It is noted for its concert programming and virtuoso orchestra, an intimate concert pavilion, and multi-generational music education and appreciation events.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. (February 12, 2019) – Classical Tahoe celebrates its 8th season of classical music and jazz performances with invited musicians from the top orchestras of the world, performing at Lake Tahoe’s North Shore on the campus of Sierra Nevada College, July 7- August 11, 2019.

Under the direction of Conductor and Artistic Director Joel Revzen, the Classical Tahoe Orchestra brings together musicians from the Metropolitan Opera, Los Angeles and New York Philharmonics, Philadelphia Orchestra, the symphonies of San Francisco, Seattle, Dallas, Toronto, Vancouver, and other exceptional organizations. The nine-concert series features symphonies of Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Stravinsky, Mozart and others, in addition to works of lesser-known, diverse composers.

“Each musician is individually invited because of their unique artistry and experience,” said Maestro Revzen. “It’s a thrilling experience to hear an orchestra of this remarkable caliber in this intimate 400-seat concert pavilion, performing repertoire most often heard in a larger hall. The audience feels as if they are on-stage with the musicians.”

In 2019, guest soloists travel to Lake Tahoe from all over the globe; the opening concert brings French harpist Emmanuel Ceysson, Principal Harp of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in Gliére’s Concerto for Harp and Orchestra, and the weekend includes Brahms’ Symphony No. 4, Dubensky’s Concerto Grosso for Three Trombones and Tuba, and Classical Tahoe’s Principal Trombone Weston Sprott, also of the MET Orchestra, in a solo appearance.

The second weekend highlights Russian pianist Svetlana Smolina, winner of the “Live on Stage” performance series, in Rachmaninoff’s powerful Piano Concerto No. 3, with the next evening featuring a full evening of popular opera repertoire with star soprano Jennifer Rowley, recently acclaimed for her performances of the title role of Adriana Lecouvreur at the MET. The closing weekend includes Joan Tower’s Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman No. 1, as well as Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite, and finishes the season with the return of Israeli violinist Itamar Zorman performing the Sibelius Concerto for Violin and Orchestra.

In addition to the full orchestra concerts, masterpieces of chamber music repertoire are performed in the concert Pavilion each week throughout the festival. Season 8 features works by Bach, Brahms, and Debussy.

Classical Tahoe will feature two jazz concerts in 2019. Cuban pianist and composer Aldo López-Gavilán, a recording artist who excels in both the classical and jazz worlds will perform with his trio at the lakefront estate of Kern Schumacher for the Classical Tahoe Summer Gala on July 7, 2019. Grammy-nominated American jazz vocalist Jazzmeia Horn and her ensemble will perform in the Pavilion to close the Classical Tahoe Festival on August 11, 2019.

The Classical Tahoe Music Institute, inaugurated in 2018, will continue to offer multi-generational programs for music education and appreciation throughout the 2019 festival season. Programs include; a collegiate String Quartet Residency; partnerships with the Reno Pops Orchestra for a Community Orchestra and Sierra Nevada College for a Community Chorus; an inaugural Piano Competition; Music and Movement classes for children; Free Family Concert and Music Maker’s Faire with family music making experiences; Jazzmeia Horn teaching workshops for high school jazz band students, and a sing-along screening of the music-filled romantic comedy Mamma Mia.

Classical Tahoe Orchestra concerts begin at 7 p.m. at the Classical Tahoe Pavilion on the campus of Sierra Nevada College in Incline Village, Nevada. Concert ticket prices are $29, $59, $89 and $129. Chamber music concerts are $30 and include “Meet the Musicians” conversation opportunities.. Student tickets are offered at a 50 percent discount off regular ticket pricing.
