Dear Friends of Classical Tahoe, On behalf of the board, staff, and musicians, we hope that you are healthy and adapting well to these uncertain times. As an organization, we are steadfast in our commitment to honor Maestro Joel Revzen's vision and Classical Tahoe mission to provide musical excellence and inspire community vitality. With this in mind, we have an exciting new adaptation of Classical Tahoe Season 9 to share with you. A thoughtful and intentional plan to enjoy performances this summer has evolved over the past three months. Classical Tahoe will pivot from holding orchestra concerts and a summer gala. Instead, we are preparing a Chamber Music Concert Series. These concerts will be performed outdoors in beautiful lakefront gardens for small audiences of 30. Ten musicians will perform each week, including soloists: harpist Emmanuel Ceysson, pianist Gilles Vonsattel, and violinist David Chan, who were originally scheduled to perform with the orchestra this year. Cynthia Rhys, beloved program annotator, will also be joining us this summer. These performances will be streamed live and available via wi-fi to those in our Classical Tahoe community who wish to enjoy music at home, with the added potential of reaching a much larger audience. In an exciting new partnership, PBS Reno - KNPB Ch5 will record several Season 9 chamber performances for a subsequent televised broadcast production. Their award-winning production team will capture visually the artistry of the music, the beauty of the lake, and the stories of both musicians and patrons who make up the Classical Tahoe community. While COVID-19 has prevented many in-person gatherings, this partnership will bring the story of Classical Tahoe’s world-class celebration of the arts to an over-the-air audience of 125,000 per week. With everlasting gratitude, Maestro Joel Revzen is remembered for his numerous artistic accomplishments and the deep, personal, relationships he forged with the Classical Tahoe community, as a steward of the arts, as a mentor, as a friend. Maestro Revzen’s relationships with lauded musicians and world-renowned soloists, who by his invitation, performed at Classical Tahoe, ensured the young festival’s reputation for excellent programming and performance during Maestro Revzen’s position as Artistic Director and Principal Conductor from the festival’s inaugural season in 2012 until his death on May 25, 2020, from complications related to COVID-19. More big news on the faculty front—Austin native Billy R. Hunter, Jr. has been named Professor of Trumpet and will begin his appointment in the 2020-2021 academic year! @utaustintrumpets He is currently principal trumpet with The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra @metorchestra. In addition to this he is also Principal Trumpet with the Classical Tahoe Orchestra in Lake Tahoe @classicaltahoe. He has performed as guest principal with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony in Germany, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) @malaysianphilharmonicorchestra in Kuala Lumpur, the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra in Chicago, and most recently The Philadelphia Orchestra @philorch. In addition to orchestral playing, Hunter is also an avid soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, and clinician worldwide. He has appeared as soloist with the South African International Chamber Music Festival in Stellenbosch, SA, Chineke! Orchestra in London, UK, and the New World Symphony in Miami, FL @nwsymphony amongst several other orchestras in states all over the US, Japan, Taiwan, and China. Hunter comes to UT from positions at the Manhattan School of Music @msm.nyc and the Peabody Institute @peabodyinstitute.
